Perfecting Buttonholes & Button Bands | Online Workshop



Knowing the best finishing techniques is essential at the last stages of any successful project. This includes attaching buttons, creating buttonholes, and installing button bands. This class will walk you through the best way to prepare smooth edges for stress-free stitches for button bands, calculating ratios based on gauges, making the right size horizontal and vertical buttonholes, and how to place and attach buttons.

Homework:

Use a solid-color DK or worsted weight yarn to make the following swatches.


Swatch #1:

CO 20 sts.

Row 1: Sl1 wyf, purl to last st, k1.

Row 2: Sl1 wyf, bring yarn to back, knit to end.

Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 3"/7.5 cm. Bind off all sts.

Block the swatch.


Swatch #2:

CO 20 sts.

Row 1: Sl1 wyf, *k2, p2; rep from * to last 3 sts, k3.

Row 2: Sl1 wyf, *p2, k2; rep from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1.

Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 1"/2.5 cm. Bind off all sts.

Block the swatch.

 

Swatch #3:

CO 12 sts.

Row 1: Sl1 wyf, purl to last st, k1.

Row 2: Sl1 wyf, bring yarn to back, knit to end. (button band)

Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 1"/2.5 cm. Leave sts on needle. (used for buttonhole exercise)

Supplies: 
Homework swatches, locking markers, yarn used for swatches, one medium size (1/2” diameter) button, one smaller flat button, sewing needle.

Faina is a great communicator and energetic teacher who cares about her students and focuses on sharing her knowledge and excitement about the craft. She teaches at Vogue Knitting Live, Interweave Yarn Fest, and various venues such as guilds and yarn shops around the country and abroad. Faina's designs often appear in internationally recognized magazines such as Rowan, Vogue Knitting, Interweave Knits, Knit.Purl, Cast-On and in numerous books. Faina is best known for her elegant and well-fitted classic designs.
