Color & Texture from the Loom - Online Workshop

In this 2-session, one day workshop, we will investigate how warping methods and pick-up patterns can create texture and color variations in our woven fabrics.

These two warps each show a different combination of color and texture. The grey warp is a double cowl using Soft Silk as the warp and the weft, with pick-up patterns adding more texture to the cloth. Both the yarn and the pick-up patterns contribute to the interesting texture of the cloth.
The adobe color cowl is created using Soft Silk and El Linio in both the warp and weft creating a familiar Color and Weave pattern called Houndstooth Check. In this warp the two types of yarn and specific color pattern contribute to the texture and interest of the cloth.

This workshop includes patterns for both cowls with pick-up patterns and color and weave techniques.

Please note: Your loom will need to be warped with the Soft Silk prior to the start of class.

We will not be covering warping and weaving basics in this workshop

Yarn needed for this class:

  • 2 skeins of Soft Silk of one color (you will need to wind the skeins into balls or cakes)
  • 2 balls of El Linio of one color (this will be a contrast color)
  • Contrast color specifically for the Honeycomb pick up pattern. In the sample shown in the class photo, a silk ribbon was used.

This sample was created using El Linio for warp and weft with a contrast of silk embroidery thread:

Instructor: Cynthia Jerauld
Instructor Bio: My life in fiber arts has been a journey leading me through the forests of thread and yarn and across the plains of fabric to finally find my home in the magic of the loom. Being immersed in the crafts of sewing, knitting, crocheting, dyeing, and many things in between, has enabled me to understand many ways of approaching techniques and design in weaving and in teaching.
